Lake Winnipeg – White Men’s Writing on the Rock

Travelled by sailboat from Gimli, Manitoba to community of Berens River. Travelled by outboard up Leaf River to search for rock carvings we became aware of from local oral tradition. Brought side scan sonar and diving capability.

2013

York Factory – Battle of Hudson Bay, Explorers Club Flag Expedition #109

Travelled via boat from Gillam, Manitoba down the Nelson River to Port Nelson then around Marsh Point and up the Hayes River to York Factory. Used Geometrics 882 magnetometer to test for metal at Five Fathom Hole, evaluated search site of The Pelican, and used metal detectors at locations on and offshore (at low tide).

2013

Lake Winnipeg – White Men’s Writing on the Rock

Travelled by sailboat from Gimli, Manitoba to community of Berens River to test side scan sonar searching and talk with locals about an oral tradition about rock carvings in the local area called “White Men’s Writing on the Rock”. We were first sailboat at Berens River in 10 years.

2012

Port Nelson and York Factory

Travelled via boat from Gillam, Manitoba down the Nelson River to Port Nelson then around Marsh Point and up the Hayes River to York Factory. Used a Royal Canadian Navy lifeboat and 9HP outboard motor to simulate Viking aftboat and power/speed of rowing. Evaluated isostatic rebound, geographic change, and compared available maps from 1697 to present.
